1. Why do hair loss occur?

Apart from the genetic or commonest form, there are autoimmune causes which is Alopecia Areata and Lupus.

Infective causes such as Kerion/fungal infection and those associated with disease states such as Anemia, Thyroid disorders such as Hyperthyroidism/Hypothyroidism, Chemotherapy, post pregnancy or post infective (such as dengue) known as Telogen Effluvium and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

2. Are there any risk factors which people should look out for?

Exacerbating factors may include lifestyle factors such as smoking, stress, lack of exercise and problems with sleep.

I start to have a very little hair loss when I was studies in college. Lacking of sleep, exercise and stress of assignments makes my lifestyle goes unhealthy. That’s my starting point of hair loss journey. But is kinda different case of me compare to others Alopecia patients.

When people asking about the solution of the hair loss, what would you suggest? Go for treatment? People might directly recommend the hair care centre which can cost you about 10K and the result is not really good (information from one of my auntie).

3. What are the common treatment options for alopecia?

Medication such as Finasteride is a very effective oral medication that prevents further progress of this condition. In addition Minoxidil is often useful.
For women, Diane 35 is an option. Supplement wise, it is conventional for us to suggest Biotin and Zinc supplements. But please consult a dermatologist or a Hair Transplant surgeon before starting any medication. 🙂

4. How effective are supplements and medication in treating this condition?

Medication works very well – Finasteride retains the follicles already present and increases density as well. Supplements have not been studied as stringently but conventionally, we often prescribe Biotin or Zinc.

5. Under what circumstances, will someone be recommended to undergo a hair graft?

Hair transplantation is necessary for those with sufficient baldness to deem worth doing, and with good donor area (hair is usually harvested at the back of the scalp). Even if the donor area is deficient, the beard or chest area can now be used as a donor area as well.
Hair lost from traumatic events, such as burns or motor vehicle accidents can be transplanted as well. Some men and women often request cosmetic transplants to increase density of their eyebrows or create a beard or goatee. This has good results too.

6. What can someone expect from a hair graft session? Please walk us through the process. Also, what is the average treatment cost?

The procedure is done entirely under local anaesthesia.
First, the donor area is harvested. This takes from 30 mins to several hours depending whether it is by Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
If the process is by FUE, the entire scalp is shaved before starting transplanting surgical procedure.
If it’s by FUT,  only a minimal strip is harvested and the patient can return to work faster, like in a couple of days.
The grafts are prepped and stored in chilled plates. After local anaesthesia has been administered to the recipient area on the top of the scalp, the sites or slits are created for the grafts to then be inserted by a team of transplant nurses. This process may take several hours depending on the expertise of the team and the number of grafts.
Choosing a good team here is crucial as you don’t want the grafts to remain too long outside the body either.Hair Graft_1
Treatment cost is purely based on consultation.

7. What are some common misconceptions about hair grafts which might be hindering people from undergoing the procedure?

I think, it’s the misconception of it sounding painful when in fact, it is very well tolerated. Also they imagine the strip scar is worse than it really is. All you need is around 1 cm length of hair to cover it.

8. What advice do you have for individuals who are struggling with alopecia?

Don’t consider therapies other than those proven by credible studies. So, don’t waste valuable time and money on NON MEDICAL hair therapy centres or beauty spas and salons.
Established supplements and hair transplants are the ONLY therapies proven to work. With hair that will last a lifetime!

On the other hand, there is a spontaneous procedure that Dr. Ruban performed on Ayu (blogger)!

Problem:
AyueJean, she has kinda serious white bump on her stomach and she have no idea what is it about. It is irritating her for quite sometime. She has nothing to do with that until the day she met Dr Ruban.

Solution:
As Dr Ruban said it is lipomasLipomas are soft, fatty lumps that grow under the skin. So Dr Ruban used the needle to poke a small hole to released the fats!

The whole process is so fun and satisfied!!

(I am kinda obsessed on dermatologist procedure so I am excited to see all those process!)
